Forward deployed engineer cost US vs India: a budgeting guide

How do you compare forward deployed engineer costs in the US and India?

Compare forward deployed engineer cost US vs India using the same scope, availability and support obligations. Add employer overhead and hiring costs to the US option, and coordination, onboarding and coverage to the offshore quote. Use current offers; the numerical examples below are hypothetical, not market rates.

Why a salary-versus-monthly-fee comparison is incomplete

A salary buys an employment relationship with responsibilities shaped by your organization. An offshore quote buys a stated service scope that may include some supporting roles and exclude others. Comparing the headline numbers can hide differences in customer discovery, QA, production support and management effort.

Start with a role definition: customer workshops, Python and API work, React changes, deployment approval, operating support and handover. Decide who owns each item under both options. Our guide to hire offshore forward deployed engineers explains the responsibilities; the budgeting exercise begins once that scope is clear.

Build the US employment-cost baseline

Use a current offer or your own compensation plan as the salary input. Add your actual employer costs, benefits, recruiting, equipment and any tools paid per employee. Allocate management and onboarding effort using an explicit assumption rather than a universal overhead percentage.

Keep one-time hiring costs separate from recurring annual costs. If the position also requires travel or on-call work, include those arrangements consistently. Do not add costs already included in another line, and avoid presenting uncertain estimates as precise market benchmarks.

For a first-year view, include the ramp-up period and any gap before the engineer starts. For a longer view, identify expected compensation changes and maintenance responsibilities. Use more than one scenario when those assumptions materially affect the decision.

Normalize the offshore proposal

Request a written quote with the engineer's responsibilities, weekly availability, billing currency and period. Ask whether QA, infrastructure support, customer meetings, leave coverage and replacements are included. State the support hours explicitly; daily meeting attendance is not equivalent to continuous incident response.

Add your own retained costs: product ownership, architecture review, coordination and access setup. Include travel, additional specialist work and any minimum commitment or notice period. Record who pays for software licenses and production accounts so the same cost does not disappear from one side of the comparison.

Separate exchange-rate assumptions from the underlying service price. A quote in USD, GBP or CAD may lead to a different budgeting exposure for the buyer. Use the currency agreed in the proposal and check applicable charges with your finance team.

A hypothetical first-year comparison

Example assumptions only: a US hire has an annual salary of $150,000, employer benefits and overhead of $30,000, recruiting cost of $15,000 and initial equipment cost of $3,000. That produces a first-year total of $198,000 for this scenario. These inputs are invented for planning and do not describe a surveyed salary or a specific candidate.

For the offshore scenario, assume a service fee of $8,000 per month for 12 months, $18,000 in retained coordination and review effort, $6,000 in onboarding and $6,000 in additional coverage. The total is $126,000. The difference from the hypothetical US scenario is $72,000 before shared usage costs, travel or any other exclusions.

Sensitivity matters: if the offshore fee were $10,000 per month, the same scenario would total $150,000 and the difference would fall to $48,000. If extra support or internal review is needed, add it. A calculation demonstrates how assumptions interact; it does not guarantee that either hiring model will cost that amount or deliver equivalent results.

Illustrative assumptions only, not salary benchmarks or WASS pricing. Both examples exclude usage costs and travel. Replace every assumption with your scope and current quotes; included benefits, equipment and support must be confirmed.

Budget API, cloud and LLM usage separately

The engineering fee may not include the services the application consumes. Track cloud hosting, storage, integration subscriptions, model calls and monitoring separately. Use expected workload and a range of failure or retry rates to estimate operating cost, then compare those estimates with actual pilot usage.

If an AI workflow is involved, ask for cost per completed task as well as cost per request. A cheap request that triggers repeated retries or manual correction can be expensive in use. Set explicit limits on repeated tool actions and investigate unexpected consumption; OWASP includes unbounded consumption among its LLM application risks.

Use delivery outcomes to interpret the budget

For a comparable pilot, define accepted customer workflows, required documentation and a support period. Track total spend against accepted outcomes, while separately recording customer access delays and scope changes. Avoid treating lines of code or ticket counts as a financial result.

A lower fee may require more internal review. A higher-fee proposal may include useful continuity or support, but require evidence of those inclusions. Ask each vendor to explain the work and responsibilities behind its quote, then evaluate the proposed engineer rather than inferring quality from price.

Decide with scenarios and an explicit scope

Prepare a base case, a case with more customer coordination and a case with additional production support. Show the assumptions that move the result most. The calculator below can help explore your inputs, but review its categories against your own scope before relying on its totals.

If you are ready to hire forward deployed engineers from India, use the selection playbook to assess the people behind the proposal. Frequently asked questions

What does a forward deployed engineer cost in the US versus India?
There is no single comparable rate without a defined scope. Use current compensation inputs and written offshore proposals, including support, coordination and operating costs.
Are the article's cost figures market rates?
No. The $198,000 US and $126,000 offshore totals are hypothetical first-year examples with explicit assumptions. They are not salary benchmarks or WASS prices.
What can be missing from an offshore quote?
Potential exclusions include QA, infrastructure work, incident coverage, travel, customer coordination, onboarding and usage-based services. Request written inclusions and exclusions.
How do I compare cost when the scopes differ?
Assign each responsibility to an owner and add the cost of retained or additional work. Compare accepted customer outcomes under a consistent pilot scope.
