ABDM integration end to end — the complete technical guide

ABDM compliance for an Indian clinic means five concrete integrations: ABHA linking, HIP registration, HIU registration, consent-manager handling and Health Facility Registry enrolment — each with an NHA approval step.

The five pieces

1. ABHA: create, verify and link a patient's ABHA number to your records.

2. HIP (Health Information Provider): register so your clinic can share records into the network on consent.

3. HIU (Health Information User): register so your clinicians can request records from other providers.

4. Consent manager: handle consent requests, grants, revocations and expiry, and honour them on every exchange.

5. HFR (Health Facility Registry): enrol the facility so it is discoverable.

The approval path

Every integration is built against the NHA sandbox, then goes through a milestone-based verification before production keys are issued. This review is the long pole — begin it before the rest of the build is finished, not after.

Package health records as FHIR bundles for exchange; the network expects standardised bundles, not your internal schema.

Common mistakes

Treating ABDM as a single feature and underscoping it. Building HIP without HIU (or vice versa) and discovering the clinic needs both. Storing consent as a boolean instead of an auditable artefact with scope and expiry. Leaving HFR enrolment to the end and blocking discovery.

Frequently asked questions

What does ABDM integration involve for a clinic?
Five integrations: ABHA number linking, Health Information Provider registration, Health Information User registration, consent-manager handling, and Health Facility Registry enrolment — each verified through the NHA gateway.
How long does ABDM compliance take?
Around six weeks of build, but the NHA sandbox-to-production approval runs in parallel and is the critical path, so start it first.
Is ABDM compliance mandatory in India?
It is required for registered healthcare providers participating in the national digital health ecosystem, and increasingly expected by patients and payers.
