01 / START WITH THE RIGHT QUESTION

What Is Staff Augmentation

Staff augmentation adds outside professionals to a team you already manage. Your company usually keeps ownership of priorities, technical direction and delivery decisions. The provider helps supply the agreed role and capacity. This differs from handing a complete project to a provider that manages the delivery. Before choosing either model, decide which management responsibilities your organization is prepared to keep.

The role needs clear boundaries. Name the tasks the person can own, the decisions they can make and who reviews their work. A contractor joining a mature engineering team may need little process design, while a new product may still lack technical leadership. Adding a developer will not automatically fill those leadership gaps unless they are part of the role you discuss and approve.

02 / A PRACTICAL WORKING PLAN

When You Need It

Augmentation may fit when your backlog has a known skill gap and your internal team can supply direction. You might need frontend capacity for a release, a backend specialist for an integration or QA support for a testing backlog. The need can be temporary or ongoing. Define the work first, then discuss the level of experience and capacity that would make the assignment useful.

It may be less suitable when you need someone else to define the product, coordinate several disciplines and own a complete release. In that case, a managed project or dedicated team may fit better. WASS discusses these boundaries during discovery. Being clear about the model helps you compare proposals and avoids hiring a specialist into a situation that requires a delivery owner as well.

Meet the people

Discuss who will do the work and which responsibilities they will own. Review relevant experience before approving the plan.

Align the schedule

Agree when your teams need live discussion and how questions and decisions are recorded between meetings.

Clarify ownership

Set repository access, project IP terms and third-party licensing expectations before the build begins.

Review useful progress

Use demonstrations, agreed acceptance rules and written updates to assess the work and identify the next decision.

03 / THE SKILLS YOUR WORK NEEDS

Roles Available

Discuss frontend, backend, full-stack, mobile, quality assurance or cloud roles based on your next release. Suitability depends on the specific people available, not the title on a service page. Share your codebase, architecture and tools at a level appropriate for discovery. Explain what the person should be able to do independently and where they will work with an internal specialist.

The role brief should include communication expectations as well as technical skills. Does the engineer need to explain trade-offs to a product owner, work with designers or help review another developer's changes? Name those activities so they can be discussed in the interview. The best fit is someone whose experience matches the actual assignment and whose working process fits your team.

04 / FROM BRIEF TO REVIEWABLE WORK

Add Capacity Without Losing Ownership

Begin with a role brief, planned workload and the internal manager responsible for the assignment. Review proposed experience and interview the person before approval. Agree hours, communication, access and review responsibilities. If the engineer will use sensitive systems, prepare the correct environment and permissions before the start rather than sending broad credentials to make onboarding feel faster.

During the assignment, use your normal issue tracking and code review process where practical. Review the quality of completed work and the support the person needs. If the scope changes, check whether the same role still fits. Plan offboarding or extension early so documentation, access removal and knowledge transfer are handled as part of the engagement instead of left until the final day.

05 / A BUDGET YOU CAN REVIEW

Staff Augmentation Cost and Terms

The quote depends on the role, relevant experience, planned hours and engagement length. Request a USD proposal that states what capacity is included and how changes are handled. Confirm the treatment of meetings, leave, overtime and replacement. Ask which support responsibilities belong to the provider and which remain with your internal manager so the commercial terms reflect the actual working arrangement.

Compare the proposal with the full cost of your alternatives, including internal review and onboarding time. A time-based contract does not by itself promise a certain feature output. Define the tasks and quality expectations separately. Use only confirmed rates in the planner below, and keep an unapproved amount as a placeholder in your own budget until the proposal is reviewed.

06 / MAKE A FAIR COMPARISON

Staff Augmentation vs Outsourcing

With augmentation, your organization generally directs the work of additional specialists. With project outsourcing, the provider takes on an agreed delivery scope and associated coordination. The boundary is set by the contract, not the label. Write down who owns requirements, architecture, task assignment, testing and release acceptance before deciding which model is appropriate for your business.

Choose augmentation when you have an internal process and need capacity within it. Consider outsourcing when you need a provider to coordinate a defined result. A mixed arrangement may also work, but it needs especially clear ownership so the same task is not assumed to belong to both teams or left without an owner. Review the model as your organization and workload change.

10 / CLEAR ANSWERS

FAQs

Use these answers to prepare your brief. The proposal and agreed contract define the work, price, access and support for your engagement.

Who manages an augmented developer?

Your organization usually sets priorities and reviews work, with the provider's support defined in the agreement. Name the internal manager and technical reviewer before onboarding so the developer has a clear route for questions and approval.

Is augmentation suitable for a new business without engineers?

It may leave management or technical leadership gaps if nobody can guide and review the work. Discuss a managed project or delivery team when you need those responsibilities covered as well as implementation capacity.

Can I interview the proposed specialist?

Yes. Review the role with WASS and meet the proposed person before approval. Ask about the tools, technical decisions and communication tasks in your assignment rather than relying only on a general experience summary.

Can a specialist use our own tools?

Agree the development environment, issue tracker, repositories and access policy before the assignment. Your team should prepare permissions and setup notes so the person can work within the same controls as other contributors.

What if we need a different skill later?

Discuss the new role and availability before changing the assignment. A revised scope may require different experience, rates or onboarding. Plan knowledge transfer when one specialist's work becomes another person's responsibility.

Does staff augmentation include a guaranteed project result?

A capacity agreement and a project-delivery commitment are different. Confirm what is being purchased and how work is accepted. Do not assume that a monthly role includes ownership of an undefined release or unlimited support.
